Weighted grade average calculator by credit points
Enter a grade and the credit points for each course, and the average updates as you type. Below it, check what average you need in your next credits to reach a target.
What you need to reach a target
average = Σ(grade × credits) ÷ Σ credits
How a weighted average works
Each grade is multiplied by the course’s credit points, the products are added up, and the total is divided by the total credits. So a 5-credit course moves your average twice as much as a 2.5-credit one.
An example
85 in a 5-credit course, 78 in a 4-credit course and 92 in a 3.5-credit course: 85×5 + 78×4 + 92×3.5 = 1,059. Divided by 12.5 credits, that is an average of 84.72.
What you need to reach a target
To reach a target average after more credits, multiply the target by all your credits (existing and new), subtract the products you already have, and divide by the new credits. In the example above, reaching 87 after 20 more credits takes an average of 88.43 in them.
Notes
Pass/fail courses with no numeric grade do not count toward the average: leave the grade empty.
If you took a course twice, which grade counts differs between institutions. Check your regulations and enter only the grade that counts.
