Engineering unit converter: pressure, energy, power, force and torque
Choose a kind of unit, enter a value, and see it in every unit at once. Conversion goes through the SI unit, with exact factors.
In every unit
value_to = value_from × factor_from ÷ factor_to
How the conversion works
Every unit is defined as a multiple of an SI unit: the pascal, joule, watt, newton or newton-metre. Converting multiplies by the source unit’s factor and divides by the target’s, so every conversion is consistent with every other.
The factors
One atmosphere is exactly 101325 Pa, and 1 bar = 100000 Pa. 1 psi = 6894.757 Pa, and 1 kgf/cm² = 98066.5 Pa. A kilogram-force is exactly 9.80665 N. 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ.
Things to watch
There are two horsepowers: mechanical horsepower (hp), about 745.7 W, and metric horsepower (PS), exactly 735.49875 W. European car specs usually quote the metric one.
There are several definitions of the calorie. This converter uses the thermochemical calorie, 4.184 J. The international calorie is 4.1868 J, about 0.07 per cent apart.
Many pressure gauges read gauge pressure, above atmospheric, not absolute pressure. Absolute pressure is gauge pressure plus about 101.3 kPa. This converter does not switch between the two.
1 kgf/cm² is very close to 1 bar but not equal: they differ by about 2 per cent.
